Transitioning to a Natural Economy

Check out this post by Canadian blogger Dave Pollard about transitioning from the "industrial economy" to what he calls a "natural economy." The natural economy includes enterprise that naturally arises to fulfill the needs of the community. This is related to what I believe is the fundamental purpose of business - to provide the goods and services needed in a community.

Here's a chart comparing the relationships in each:

Notice the connections between our relationship to community and our capacities for learning and entrepreneurship. How would the way we do business change if we were more closely connected to our community - to our sense of belonging, to being known and trusted, to experiencing our work and lives as intimately connected to the lives around us?

He includes creating local networks and starting grassroots campaigns to promote buying locally as two key steps that communities can take to transition to a natural economy. Both of these enable us to build and enhance relationships, create more connections, and work in collaboration to provide what we need. What are ways you connect and deepen relationships with your neighbors at home and in business?
