Record Store Day - April 17th
2010 Record Store Day
By Paul Epstein of Twist & Shout
Three years ago when the first Record Store day so wildly exceeded our expectations, it seemed like it might just be a fluke. We’d seen so many things that were thrown at the wall, with the vain hope of sticking, slide goopily to the floor in a well-meaning heap. Then last year when it turned out to be even bigger than year one (in spite of a snow storm) we started to believe this thing might just grow some hair.
Now in 2010 - at least a decade after people started saying “the internet” was going to put us out of business - we are in the midst of a strong twenty-second year with tons of great releases (that people are actually buying). And the Third Annual Record Store Day is shaping up to be the biggest yet. The list of releases is a staggering three times bigger than last year’s. There are so many big releases by important artists, we don’t even know where to start. Check out the full list here.
As was the case the previous two years, things will be extremely limited and strictly first come first served. We won’t let anyone horde anything and we will try to get as much stuff into as many customers’ hands as possible. In anticipation of the growing resurgence in vinyl and the growing appreciation of Record Store Day, Twist & Shout ordered heavily this year. In the last couple of years we have sold out of many items by midday. We hope we will get what we ordered, but as always it’s a crapshoot, so GET THERE EARLY!!!
In addition to all the Record Store Day products, our vinyl elves have been stashing away some extra special goodies for this auspicious occasion. Be looking out for those collectibles and all sorts of rarities, giveaways, food, drink and good vibes on this most special of days for the record store community.
We will of course be presenting some special instore performances. Starting the night before we will be presenting Citizen Cope (April 16 at 6 p.m.), then all day during Record Store Day we will have a series of DJ’s supplying the music (schedule below), culminating with a set by downtempo sensation DJ Bonobo (4 p.m.).
In its own cool way, Record Store Day is turning into something memorable and historic each year. It’s our own little Mardi Gras, or Easter... yeah that’s it, the resurrection of the the record store.
