Is your business creating meaning?

We often talk about the differences between local business and non-local business. For us, a local business is defined as one that is headquartered in Colorado, without being owned by a non-Colorado company. We then survey our members about their other habits: where their owners and employees live, who they purchase from, and to whom they sell their goods and services.

These measurements and definitions are, to some extent, arbitrary. Not all local businesses are good, just like not all non-local businesses are evil. But our current economic policies and structures are blind to any other kind of measurement except one: the capacity of a business to make a profit.

I was recently interviewed by the guys at Tuggl.com about local businesses and the MHBA. Here's a portion of the interview where we're talking about the role of local businesses in our community. Enjoy!

The New Economy, This Week in Denver

Okay, the cat's out of the bag. We admit that one of the primary reasons we formed the Mile High Business Alliance is to help us address this big question:

How do we effectively provide for our needs without destroying people or the planet in the process?

We really like this article written by Peggy Noonan and published February 20 by the Wall Street Journal. (read the article on their site) Mostly for the statement she makes at the end (and which we bolded for emphasis:)

Maximizing Economic Impact of Colorado Rescue Funds

Considering Colorado’s $600 million budget shortfall and other economic challenges (recession, unemployment, reduced business revenue and tax revenue), we must maximize the economic impact of federal stimulus funds coming into the State.  One critical way of doing this is to ensure that funds are not spent just once in Colorado, but instead ensuring they re-circulate in our local economies to create a healthy multiplier effect.

Share the impact of the economy

The Colorado Public Radio Public Insight Network wants to know how the current economic problems are impacting local businesses. They have a great survey that only takes a few minutes to complete. We think it's important to be talking about how local businesses can survive (and perhaps even thrive?) while addressing the real challenges we're facing. (share your story now)
