Eat Local First

5 Tips for Nourishing the Local Food System

How to Nourish the Local Food System

Every dollar you spend is an investment in something. If you'd like more food choices that nurture our local economy, here are a few things you can do:

Read the labels. Find out where the stuff you're buying comes from and seek out local products. Doing so will result in more bang for your buck; your dollar will have a deeper impact.

Visit farmers' markets. This is one of the best ways to find the freshest food in season. You also get the unique opportunity to meet the people who grew and raised your food.

Eating Locally Just Got Easier: It's Farmers' Market Season!

Ahh yes, the growing season is upon us in Colorado (FINALLY!!) and that means that it's time for our beloved farmers' markets to open up.

Okay, there are some folks that have been livin' la vida locavore so-to-speak with their year-round markets. Sincere thanks go to Denver Urban Homesteading with its Indoor Farmers Market and to the Highland's In Season Local Market.

But as for now, this is the time for the rest of the farmers' markets to join the locavore party. They are one of the best ways to eat locally as well as support local artisans such as soap makers and bakers. LocalHarvest.org has a great blurb on why eating locally is environmentally important that I can't resist sharing:

The Eat Local First Dining Guide is a new resource to connect neighbors with unique dining establishments that embody “Local Flavor.” The locally owned restaurants, cafes & markets featured in the guide are not only led by our neighbors, but are committed to sourcing their own produce, meats & products from local sources.

A new initative of the Mile High Business Alliance, under the umbrella of the "Eat Local First" campaign, the Local First Dining Guide will follow the same straight-forward format as the neighborhood Local Flavor Guides, effectively introducing neighbors and tourists alike to local food-focused enterprises.
